If there is one thing every guitar player needs it is some cool riffs to play, the only problem is though often the riffs you find you too difficult for beginner guitar players. This is why I brought together 5 cool one string riffs suitable for beginners.

So tune up, plug in and lets get rocking…

Riff 1: Under Pressure

‘Under Pressure’ was recorded by Queen and singer David Bowie in July 1981 and released as a single in October 1981. The song can be found on Queens album Hot Space.

This a great song for beginner guitarist as it only contains two notes and they are both open strings!

Riff 2: 20th Century Boy

’20th Century Boy’ was recorded by T-Rex in December 1972 and released in 1973. The song was not released on an original studio album but was included as a bonus track on a reissue of the bands 1973 album Tanx.

Like Under Pressure this riff only contains two notes, it is a bit quicker than Under Pressure at 134 bpm but shouldn’t give you two may problems.

Riff 3: New York City Cops

‘New York City Cops’ was recorded by The Strokes in March 2001 and released in June 2001. The song can be found on the bands debut album Is This It

We are going to make things interesting with this song as it has three notes!

Riff 4: Seven Nation Army

‘Seven Nation Army’ was recorded by the White Stripes in April 2002 and released in March 2003. The song can be found on their fourth studio album Elephant.

This is such a great riff and is always high on the list of greatest riffs of all time. This is a bit trickier than the previous three due to having the most notes and an interesting triplet rhythm which should be easy enough to pick up by ear.

Riff 5: Runnin’ Down A dream

‘Runnin’ Down A Dream’ was recorded by Tom Petty and released on July 29th 1989. The song appears on Petty’s first solo album Full Moon Fever.

This is the fastest of the five riffs at 168 bpm so it will definitely get your fingers moving as well as testing your accuracy as you move down the low E string.

I hope you enjoyed the riffs and have fun with them, if you are a member of Beginner Guitar Academy head to the riffs section of the site for more one string riffs.

Keep practicing and I hope to see you soon.

Many thanks,
